Age Range of Children Supported

5 – 11 years

 

Brief Description of Special Needs catered for

They will comprise of 4 broad groups of children whose language disorder is their primary difficulty, and whose non-verbal ability is in the average range or above.

  1. Children with mainly phonological/ grammatical problems, this is, who have difficulty with the acquisition of the grammatical structure of language, including word order and word endings in expressive language.
  1. Children with problems parallel to those in (1) above, but much ,more severe because they have difficulty in understanding what is said to them their disorder is described as receptive.
  1. Children with problems mainly in the areas of semantics and or pragmatics. These children are described as having semantic/pragmatic difficulty.
  1. Children with developmental verbal dyspraxia and who have difficulty in co-ordinating at will fine rapid tongue and lip movements necessary for the production of complex sequences of sounds used in speech. Sometimes there is a fluctuating hyper nasality because of palatial inco-ordination.
  1. Children with Aspergers Syndrome and similar mild Autistic Spectrum Disorders

Children must be statemented with York Road Language Unit as the school named. Parents/carers can phone to arrange a visit to view the Unit.
